Magnesite is one of the natural mineral deposits in Nigeria, West Africa, and is one of the few natural mineral resources that are found in just one or few states in the country; it is currently found in Adamawa State.
Magnesite is otherwise, known as magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) and is characterized as a white, porous mass with a dull luster, formed of microscopic crystals with an unglazed porcelain appearance, and belongs to the group of calcite minerals.
The group of calcite minerals is of related carbonates that isomorphs with one another, having similar physical properties and forming a solid solution series, crystallizes in the trigonal system, have a suitable rhombohedral cleavage, and shows strong double refraction in transparent rhombohedrons.
Magnesite is found in sedimentary rocks, serpentinite (ultramafic rocks veins) and other rock types which are magnesium-rich and can as well be found in mountain forming belts.
It can be formed from the metasomatism of talc carbonate when subjected to high pressure and temperature in the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
Magnesite is not vastly deposited in Nigeria like some other African countries and some countries of the world, and unlike some other natural mineral resources which can be found in commercial quantities in the country, of current Kebbi states has also been listed as one of the magnesite endowed states.
There has not been any adequate approach to the exploitation of this mineral which will benefit the country at large when harnessed effectively, therefore, it is essential for the government to look into the mining system of the country to increased development in the sector and the economy.
