Eyo Festival

This is a masquerade festival in Lagos state also known as Adamu Orisa Play and celebrated to appease the deities which they believe are represented in the masquerades.

During the festival, the Eyo Masquerades are dressed in white regalia or robe, known in Yoruba as Aró palẹ, a white cloth usually wrapped around the waist flowing to their feet, facial cloth veil (Iboju), a beautifully designed hat (Àgá or akẹtẹ) with a long staff (Ọpá nbatà), gloves and socks.

Lagos, a state with the largest number of residents enjoys such cultural festival and is one of the most populated tourist events in the state. Spectators from Lagos, all parts of Nigeria and the world grace this wonderful festival.

In as much as the festival is colourful, it has its set down rules which when violated leads to punishment which is to be beaten by ọpá nbatà, the specially made staff. It is prohibited during the festival to smoke cigarettes, put on sandals and plait a particular hairdo known as Șukú, it is also an abomination to move on motorcycles and bicycles during the festival.

It is being held in Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan, Lagos Island, Lagos, it is not a yearly festival like other festivals in Nigeria, it is only held on special occasions and must be on requests to the Ádámu ÒríÈ™à cult.
