Rehabilitating and expanding water supply and sanitation infrastructure.
Building capacity for water sector institutions.
Promoting good hygiene practices to improve public health.Â
The National Irrigation Development Program aims to increase Nigeria's agricultural productivity and food security by developing irrigation infrastructure.
The Ministry is working towards constructing new irrigation schemes and rehabilitating existing ones for smallholder farmers nationwide. The National Water Resources Capacity Building Program focuses on building water sector stakeholders' technical and institutional capacity to manage Nigeria's water resources effectively.
The program includes the following:
Training water sector personnel.
Developing training materials and manuals.
Establishing water resources management institutions at the national and state levels.
In addition to these programs, the Ministry is also responsible for the management of Nigeria's dams and reservoirs, as well as the regulation of water use in the country.
The Ministry of Water Resources is committed to providing Nigeria with sustainable access to water resources, and is constantly collaborating with local government entities, communities, and other key stakeholders to achieve this goal. This collaboration offers all Nigerians the opportunity to benefit from our natural water resources.
The Nigeria Federal Ministry of Water Resources is also responsible for the implementation of the National Water Resources Master Plan (NWRMP), which is a comprehensive plan aimed at improving the management and development of Nigeria's water resources. The project covers various aspects of water resources management, including water supply and sanitation, irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, navigation, fisheries, and recreation.
The Ministry also collaborates with other government agencies and international organizations to implement projects to improve water resources management in Nigeria. For instance, the Ministry is working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to implement the Global Environment Facility (GEF) project on the Integrated Approach to the Management of the Niger Basin Transboundary Water Resources.
