Ikwuano Local Government Area is one of the existing 17 local government areas in the state located at the town of Isiala Oboro and consists of the towns of Ariam, Umuhu, Umuokpara, Omuegwu, Usok, Ibeku, Ibere, Isingwu, Nkwo-Egwu, Nwkoachara & others.

Ikwuano Local Government Area is a popular local council in Abia state created from Ikuano-Umuahia LGA in 1991. It shares a common boundary with Ini local government area of Akwa Ibom state and Umuahia North.

Ikwuano LGA is made up of four major clans namely Oboro, Ariam, Oloko and Ibere with the headquarters at Isiala Oboro. Oboro clan is made up many kindreds namely Umudike, Amawom, Umugbalu, Ndoro, Okwe, Isiala, Ogbuebule, Ikwueke, Nnono, Amaoba etc.

This local government area is also among the local council areas that constitute Abia central senatorial district. It is known and referred to as the food basket of Abia state because of its richness in agricultural produce.
